Head & Shoulders: Does world's best-selling shampoo actually work for dandruff? | Daily Mail OnlineIt's the best-selling shampoo in the world, but does it work for dandruff? By Published: 22:12 GMT, 7 April 2012 Silence Updated: 11:33 GMT, 8 April 2012 138View Comments Head and shoulders is the world's best-selling shampoo Did you know that the world's best-selling shampoo is Head ' Hombros? Around 110 bottles of the anti dandruff formula are sold every minute – 29 million a year. However, the size of the medicated shampoo market is hardly surprising: at some point, half of us will suffer the unwise and sometimes uncomfortable condition. But what causes dandruff? Which of the many products available should you use? And what about the theories that these shampoos are bad for hair, and actually promote the flakes? Here experts answer some key questions about problem scalp. Many of us have looked down on the horror of a thin white-coated flakes on the shoulder of a dark upper. But many forms of dandruff don't spill. Dandruff is characterized by the formation of thin, white or gray scales of loose skin. The epidermis (external skin layer) changes constantly and the skin cells renew all the time. The cells begin to grow from the deepest base layer on the skin and gradually push to the surface, before moving away from the scalp. The dandruff occurs when skin cells form too fast, which means more skin cells are spilled and become lumps that can be seen by the naked eye. "This increase in epidermal billing can be caused or exacerbated by abnormally high levels of a fungus called globose malasezia, which is a type of yeast and is always found in the scalp, even in those without dandruff," says trichologist Tony Maleedy. Des Tobin, a professor of Celular Biology at the University of Bradford, agrees: "This yeast is strongly involved in dandruff, although the nature of this relationship between them is not completely clear." It can introduce an inflammatory immune response in some people because yeast produces enzymes capable of causing the surface cells of the scalp to increase their cooking rate. Dermatologist Consultant Dr. Russell Emerson, at the Skin Hove Clinic, says: "The medical name for dandruff is seborrhoeic dermatitis and in some it may also affect the face. "We often see seborrhoeic dermatitis as a genetic condition in families, especially if it is serious. Those with types of greasy skin are more at risk because yeast likes to grow in fat. What do I have? There are variations in the severity and shape of the condition. 'With some types of dandruffs the flakes leave the scalp easily. In other cases, they adhere to the scalp and accumulate to form a thick cover. With simpler forms of dandruff, the scalp is usually a normal color," says Maleedy. "However, with the most severe forms of the condition there is an underlying inflammation that makes the tissues of the scalp tender and sensitive than with simple dandruff." Other factors such as stress or diet can also trigger the condition. "This is because stress increases the production of fats," says Dr. Emerson. 'The fat feeds the yeast.'Do you work SHAMPOOO DE DANDRUFF?' If the underlying cause is not treated correctly, the scales will return quickly," says Maleedy. "The ingredients that include ingredients such as coal tar, salicylic acid [Neutrogen T-Gel has both] and selenium sulfide [Selsun Blue] can be considered a bit dated compared to the most sophisticated antimicrobials in recent years." These works by smoothing the scales so they can wash. However, they have been effectively replaced by shampoo containing drugs that control the level of microorganisms in the scalp. These newer options are also less harsh, which means they can be used often. Some say using anti-dandruff shampoo exacerbates the problemMarilyn Sherlock, of the Institute of Trichologists, echoes this advice. "There are medicines that will control this condition," he says. "Zinc pyrithione [founded in Head " Shoulders, Panthene and brands of chemistry] is one of the most common treatments for this condition. "Use Head " Daily shoulders for a fortnight," says Dr. Emerson. "Then use it twice or three times a week as maintenance treatment." If once you start using it less regularly, the dandruff comes back, recommend to try shampoo with ketoconazole. "These products [Nizoral, and a brand in Boots] should be used not more than twice a week between regular shampoo." The most regular use of ketoconazole can cause skin irritation. If you have tried these two methods and your dandruff persists, visit your GP, which may refer to a dermatologist. Steroid lotions or antifungal creams and tablets are often successful in persistent cases. For facial seborrhoeic dermatitis, a PG can prescribe a topical antifungal cream or a combination of a low-intensity topical steroid with Daktacort, an antifungal. "If you suffer from severe dandruff for more than six weeks that does not respond to anti-dandruff shampoo, see your GP," says Dr. Emerson. It can be a more serious problem, like psoriasis. Did he do it wrong? Some say the use of anti-dandruff shampoo exacerbates the condition, or that once you start using it you can't stop as the scalp is based on the medication. "This is a myth," says Dr. Emerson. "The shampoo has a direct chemical effect on yeast, but it grows again so you need to keep the use." So it's about controlling the condition, instead of healing it. Many women are rejected by some formulas as they have a reputation for stripping the hair color. Again, this is a myth. Maleedy says, "It may have been true in the past, but this had more to do with the basic cleaning agents used. Most leading brands have improved formulations.' Is there NATURAL OPTIONS? The cuff is caused by fungi, so to treat topically with a hair rinse that contains loose leaf rosemary and tea tree oil can help, says the medical herbalist Lucy Stephens, from the Reva Clinic of London. 'Rosemary contains essential antifungal oils and tea tree oil has proven to have antifungal activity against a wide range of fungi. The topical aloe-vera gel has also shown improvement in seborrhoeic dermatitis due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Apply topically at night and rinse in the morning. ' Anti-point creams such as La Roche Posay Lipikar Baume AP, which contains shea butter and canola oil, can also help. "The coal shampoo is able to decrease epidermal rotation, so it has been used in the treatment of psoriasis and other skin disorders," says Maleedy. 'Juniper tar [a tar tree] is more effective than the coal tar and tends to be used in more modern treatments.'trichologists.org.uk Share or comment this article: Head " Shoulders: Does the world's best-selling shampoo really work for dandruff?
